On September 8, 2024, Saint John's Seminary hosted the second performance in its 140th Anniversary Organ Concert Series, featuring the talented Gavin Klein, Organ Scholar at the College of the Holy Cross. Klein, a member of the class of 2026, captivated the audience with his performance on the Andover Opus R-500 organ, a magnificent instrument that was rebuilt and enlarged in 2015 from the seminary’s original 1902 Hook & Hastings organ.
Klein, a native of Bolton, Massachusetts, has an impressive background in sacred music and organ performance. He has studied under esteemed instructors such as Dr. Ezequiel Menendez, C. Henry Mason, and William Ness, and has expanded his musical repertoire to include harpsichord and piano. His studies in early keyboard music and liturgical traditions, including Gregorian chant and the Pre-Conciliar Mass, have been instrumental in shaping his unique style. In 2022, Klein published his first polyphonic Mass setting, Missa Immaculati Cordis Mariae, inspired by the Renaissance compositions of Palestrina.
Throughout Central Massachusetts and Boston, Klein has served as organist for various religious congregations, including St. Cyprian's Church in Boston and the Sisters of St. Benedict Center in Still River. He is currently the organist at St. Bernard’s Church at Our Lady of Providence Parish in Worcester and regularly plays for the Trappist Monks at St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts.
The concert was a special occasion for the seminary community, bringing together clergy, students, and music enthusiasts to enjoy a stunning performance within the seminary’s beautiful chapel. This series is not only a celebration of Saint John’s Seminary’s 140-year legacy but also a testament to the power of sacred music in fostering spiritual growth and community.
Saint John’s Seminary looks forward to welcoming more talented musicians in this concert series as we continue to honor our rich heritage through music.
