The Acolyte Installation Mass took place on Sunday, November 21 on the Solemnity of Christ the King. Bishop Robert Reed, of the Archdiocese of Boston, celebrated the Mass which is held annually for candidates to the priesthood as a step toward Holy Orders (Canon 1035). Seminarians are first installed as lectors and typically installed as acolytes a year later.
The acolyte is instituted for service at the altar and to assist the Priest and Deacon. It is his place principally to prepare the altar and the sacred vessels and, if necessary, to distribute the Eucharist to the faithful as an extraordinary minister.
As part of the Installation Rite Bishop Reed placed the paten, which contains the hosts for the celebration of Mass in the hands of each candidate. He then said
"Take this vessel with bread for the celebration of the Eucharist. Make your life worthy of your service at the table of the Lord and of his Church.”
To which we each responded: Amen.
